As a Hope for Suffolk Alumni, you are forever a part of our community. This page contains information about the upcoming events at HFS and helpful resources that may benefit you. As all ways, holler if we can support you in any way!

Scholarships

We are pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Lauren Leonard Memorial Scholarship. This year, we will award scholarships to three outstanding candidates: $2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. The deadline for scholarship applications is July 19, 2024. We encourage all eligible candidates to apply and take this opportunity to advance their educational goals.

Jasmine Myrick

Meet Jasmine Myrick, a Hope for Suffolk scholarship recipient and a sophomore at Norfolk State University majoring in Elementary Education. An active campus leader, Jasmine’s involvement includes:

  • Black Cultural Society at Randolph-Macon College: Engaging in cultural and community activities.
  • Childcare Worker at the YMCA: Supporting Stay and Play, Before and After Care, and Summer Camp programs.

Jasmine encourages everyone to seize academic and personal development opportunities and to always take time to appreciate life’s moments.

Anna Gomer

Meet Anna Gomer, a Hope for Suffolk scholarship recipient and a rising sophomore at Virginia Tech majoring in Environmental Conservation. This summer, Anna is interning with the college’s advising center to help new students register for their fall courses. An active campus leader, Anna is involved in:

  • Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority: Engaging in sisterhood and community service.
  • Class of 2027 Office: Representing her class and organizing events.
  • Honors College Student Council: Contributing to the academic and social growth of honors students.
  • Students for Sustainable Practice: Promoting sustainability initiatives on campus.
  • Suicide Awareness Club: Raising awareness and providing support for mental health.

Anna, often seen sporting her Virginia Tech gear, is dedicated to creating a supportive and innovative campus environment.

Ari Cheeks

Meet Ari Cheeks, a Hope for Suffolk scholarship recipient and a junior at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) majoring in Social Work with a minor in Sociology. An active campus leader, Ari is involved in:

  • Work-Study Student at the Office of Government Relations: Contributing to the university’s governmental initiatives.
  • Department of Community Engagement’s Student Council: Enhancing community involvement and service.
  • Campus Engagement Chair for Leadership for Women of Color: Leading efforts to engage and empower women of color on campus.

Ari is also active in three clubs, fostering a vibrant and supportive campus community. She loves being involved on campus and in the surrounding communities to make a change and give back! (selfie)

Xavier Gardner

Meet Xavier Gardner, a Hope for Suffolk scholarship recipient and a Communications Media Studies major at Old Dominion University. An active campus leader, Xavier holds multiple roles, including:

  • Promotion Director for WODU Studios: Leading promotions for ODU’s student-run radio station.
  • Photographer for ODU Athletics: Capturing the excitement and spirit of ODU sports.
  • Communications Intern for Jefferson Lab in Newport News: Gaining valuable experience in the field of communications. (professional drape photo)

Joshua Parker

Meet Joshua Parker, a Hope for Suffolk scholarship recipient and a junior Sports Management major at Alabama A&M University. An active campus leader, Joshua is involved in:

  • Marching Maroon and White Band: Contributing to the vibrant spirit and musical excellence of Alabama A&M.
  • NAACP: Advocating for social justice and equality within the campus and beyond.
  • Sports Management Club: Engaging with peers to explore the dynamic world of sports management.
  • Phi Beta Lambda Business Fraternity Incorporated, Xi Xi Chapter: Demonstrating business acumen and professional growth.
  • 2024-2025 Mr. Crimson and Cream for the Delta Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated: Representing the chapter with pride and dedication. (he has on mostly back in his photo)
